Drumheller...Dinosaur Capital of the World!

Updated: May 24, 2022

We arrived in Drumheller on May 2 and stayed at Horseshoe Canyon RV Park until May 12, which is literally across the road from Horseshoe Canyon, where we love to explore and hang out amongst the coulees, hoodoos and rills. Merlot remembers it from years' past and I'm pretty sure it's his favourite place on earth.

It's crazy to think that some of the most significant fossil discoveries ever made from the Age of Reptiles have been discovered in this area and surrounding badlands areas. This area is very rich in fossils with some 35 species of dinosaurs including hadrosaurus, ceratopsians, ankylosaurs, and theropods dating back 70 million years.

Our friends and fellow RVers, Frank and Deb drove out from Calgary to have dinner with us at our site on Thursday evening. What a great evening.

Ryan also came out to join us on the weekend. We were so happy he joined us for our second hike through Horse Thief Canyon, which is in the Red Deer River valley area. This canyon earned its name during the early settler years when ranching was the main industry. Thousand of horses ranged from here to beyond the "Hand Hills" to the east. Legend has it that horses would disappear into these canyons, later to reappear carrying a different brand, hence the name "Horse Thief Canyon".

Standing on the edge and looking out into Horse Thief Canyon makes one feel very small. This canyon is so massive! It's like a huge playground! So awesome...

Unfortunately a lot of attractions don't open in Drumheller until the May long weekend, so we didn't get to go to the suspension bridge (I love bridges!) or the Atlas Coal Mine, which Barry and I really looked forward to touring; however, the Last Chance Saloon was open, and is dog friendly!!

Don't forget to check out the rest of the Drumheller pics under the Photo Albums tab. Next...Crimson Lake!
