Leaving PEI was bittersweet. Despite the weather, August was wonderful! Having Jenn and Graeme join us, getting some extra time with Ryan and Melissa, spending time with my sister and friends. That’s the bitter part of leaving. The sweet part is we’re travelling again! First stop Alma, NB. I have to say, I have never had a draw to New Brunswick….until Alma!!
Alma is a very small fishing village on the coast of the Bay of Fundy with a population of under 500! The Bay of Fundy is best known for the most variable tides in the entire world. The tides can vary up to 50 feet every six hours. We saw pictures in tourism magazines of the fishing boats sitting on the dry ocean floor and then pictures just six hours later... We had to see it for ourselves.
Our first night was such a contrast as far as RV Parks. We had a big, beautiful site on PEI in Brackley; however, it was a corner site close to the playground and pool area. Very, very noisy. Poor Merlot, who is scared of anything with wheels had a really tough time. We will stay there again; however, we will insist on a site close to the huge green space at the back! Our RV park in Alma, which was in Fundy National Park, was small and so quiet! Our first night I opened a can of beer and it actually echoed!!! Lots of trees and trails…so beautiful and peaceful!
Each morning, we took Merlot to a small beach full of rocks, which he really enjoyed. No people and he can climb on the rocks and go swimming. Perfect! Both days after Merlot was settled back at the RV we went on our hikes! So nice to get back hiking again. It’s been a few months. We really missed it.
The first hike was Matthew’s Head Trail and was just under 5km. It was a loop trail that hugged the coast for a lot of it. So beautiful!
The second was Third Vault Trail just over 7. The trail was nice and easy and then…a climb down to the most incredible 19m high waterfall we’ve seen in a very long time. Part of the trail was washed out; however, we ran into a couple who were determined to get down to the falls and encouraged us to do the same. They were awesome and had such great energy. So glad we ran into them!! The descent to the waterfall was so steep we had to use the exposed roots of the trees for leverage and stability. Look what we would have missed!!!
So many times we find hidden gems on our way to a destination. Alma was one of those places. A few very cool restaurants/pubs on the water with great food and great service.
As great as Alma was, it was a quick stop, and we were very excited to get to Maine. Acadia National Park has been on my bucket list for a long time. Like most travel days for us it was raining…really hard! What made this rainy travel day even more memorable was the alarm from our TPMS (tire pressure monitoring system) alerting us that our tire is losing air!! Finally we found a safe place to pull over to change the tire. My Husband had it changed in no time!!! Thank God! Of course, we still had to get through the border before having a well deserved drink at our new RV park in Bar Harbour before we start our adventures in Maine.
